Case Study — Slowing Host Activations on a Short-Term Rental Marketplace

During this interview, we score the candidate against five capabilities:

Dimension
What we're looking for
Analytical Rigor
Approaches the data with a clear structure. Knows which tables to query and which funnel stages to inspect first. Builds a view that spans both sides of the marketplace (guest demand and host supply) plus the platform levers that connect them.
Experimentation
Comfortable with the fundamentals of A/B testing — sample sizing, statistical significance, treatment vs. control. Bonus if they recognize when an A/B is structurally hard and reach for alternatives like switchbacks or geo-matched markets.
Problem Structuring
Asks targeted clarifying questions early, narrows the problem before diving in, and brings a mental model or framework to organize their thinking.
Marketplace Intuition
Shows product instinct. Picks up on second-order dynamics: how guest behavior shapes host outcomes, how platform decisions (ranking, pricing, fees) ripple to both sides, and how new markets behave differently from mature ones.
Communication
Organizes thinking out loud, prioritizes well, makes defensible recommendations, and handles pushback gracefully. Evaluated continuously across every answer.
